The B-24D Liberator bomber, 41-23809, Hellsadroppin' II, was assigned to the 329th Bomb Squadron, the 93rd Bomb Group, and assigned (TDY) temporary duty, to the 9th Air Force. It is reported to have flown on the Ploesti mission and aborted shortly after leaving the Libyan coast, which would exclude it's appearance in Operation Tidal Wave's participation rosters. 1 Aug 1943.
Later, Hellsadroppin II, returned to the ETO in Britain. It was declared, "war weary", and became a high visibility formation ship with the 448th Bomb Group, in the 8th Air Force in Britain, when it drew the names, Painted Virgin, You Cawn't Miss It, and, Checker Board. 4 April, 1944. It was condemned as salvage. 15 Jan 1945.
This airplane should not be confused with the B-24D, 41-23723, also named, Hellsadroppin', which was also in the 8th Air Force, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 329th Bomb Squadron.
