The B-24D, 41-23723, named, Hellsadroppin', was assigned to the 8th Air Force, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 329th Bomb Squadron in Britain, in 1942. Lt. Julian Harvey was reported to have been the command pilot on, Hellsadroppin', on Operation Tidal Wave, the bombing mission to destroy the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. Lt. Harvey turned Hellsadroppin back from the mission with an engine failure and returned safely to Benghazi, Libya. 1 Aug 1943
Lt. Harvey and, Hellsadroppin', crash landed at Alconbury, England, Nov. 7, 1942 and the airplane was salvaged. Nov. 11, 1942.
This airplane, 41-23723, Hellsadroppin', should not be confused with the B-24D, 41-23809, which was also named, Hellsadroppin' II, and was in the 8th Air Force, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 329th Bomb Squadron in Britain, in 1942. It was transferred to the 448th Bomb Group and repainted in a high visibility back and yellow checkerboard scheme, in order to be a formation assembly ship. 8 Jan 44.
