Missing in Action Cognac 31 December 1943 with Pilot Stanley D. Wainwright, Navigator Norbert A. Lorentz Jr, Ball turret gunner John Silvia, Right Waist gunner Paul F. Schatzau (4 Prisoners of War).



7 were Killed In Action (KIA) : Co-pilot John J. Bickley, Bombardier Edward W. Allard, Flight engineer/top turret gunner Arthur C. Mahy Jr, Radio Operator Paul M. McGill, Left Waist gunner Arthur M. Dauenhauer, Tail gunner Henry O. Richard, Radar Observer Sgt Henry J. Patterson (whose body was not recovered and who is still listed as MIA.)



Shot down by enemy aircraft, crashed near Cognac, France. The aircraft suffered 5 direct hits over the target. One shell exploded back of the tail wheel and knocked out the control cables. The ship went into a diving turn and was attacked by some enemy aircraft. With engine #3 out, the Fortress was last seen in the target area, spinning around, going down, then bursting into flames. Seven parachutes were seen. Missing Air Crew Report - MACR 1755 (which erroneously lists the aircraft's serial Number as 42-26037.)
