7 were Killed In Action (KIA) : Co-pilot John J. Bickley, Bombardier Edward W. Allard, Flight engineer/top turret gunner Arthur C. Mahy Jr, Radio Operator Paul M. McGill, Left Waist gunner Arthur M. Dauenhauer, Tail gunner Henry O. Richard, Radar Observer Sgt Henry J. Patterson (whose body was not recovered and who is still listed as MIA.)



Shot down by enemy aircraft, crashed near Cognac, France. The aircraft suffered 5 direct hits over the target. One shell exploded back of the tail wheel and knocked out the control cables. The ship went into a diving turn and was attacked by some enemy aircraft. With engine #3 out, the Fortress was last seen in the target area, spinning around, going down, then bursting into flames.
