42-40609 Jersey Bounce

The B-24D - 75 - CO, 42-40609, in the 8th Air Force, the 93rd Bomb Group, and the 330th Bomb Squadron, flown by Pilot Lt. Pilot Worthy A. Long, was lost on Operation Tidal Wave, shot down by flak over Ploesti, Romania. Lt. Norman C. Adams, was the navigator/bombardier on, Jersey Bounce, on the low level bombing mission over Ploesti. After his plane was hit by flak and and badly damaged, Lt Adams bailed out, was captured, and and spent 18 months in the Romanian Timsul de Jus prison camp, north of Ploesti (POW). For his valor to his country on the the Ploesti mission, Lt. Worthy Long was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart, the Soldiers Medal, and the Air Medal. He was killed, Failed To Return (FTR) from the Ploesti mission (POW). Over Ploesti, Jersey Bounce, suffered combat flak damage to it's number 1 & 4 engines, the tail turret, the nose, with four feet of it's LH wing tip missing, and crash landed at Ploesti. Six of the crew were KIA, and four became POW's. 6 KIA. 4 POW. 1-Aug-43. MACR 335.
