42-52003

B-24J Liberator 42-52003 crashed at Mill Hill on 11 October 1944. The aircraft was travelling from the large American maintenance airfield at Burtonwood to Hardwick, they crew had had difficulties taking off and fog and cloud obscured the high ground on their route, resulting in the aircraft crashing into the hill. Both members of the crew were injured in the crash but survived.

Large parts of the aircraft are thought to be scattered in the peat bogs around Mill Hill, including a Wasp engine, wing section and throttle quadrant.
