Last Mission Luftwaffe Base, Cognac France, attacked by 401BG/614BS Dec. 31, 1943 31 December 1943

Hit by FLAK while on a secondary bombing mission to Cognac, France against a Luftwaffe airfield there. Left formation and tried to return home to base. Attacked by German fighters en route. Claimed to have been shot down by Hauptman Herbert Huppertz in Fw 190A-6 of JG 2/III Stab. Crashed into the English Channel, just off of St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight, UK Dec 31, 1943. All personnel killed in action. Only the body of the Co-pilot, 2nd Lt James S. Dockendorf, was recovered.

Crashed Hey Lou Crash Site off of St Catherine's Point, Isle of Wright, UK 31 December 1943

After being damaged over a secondary site against a Luftwaffe Airbase near Cognac, France, Cognac, France, Hey Lou tried to return to base. Left formation. Tried to return home. The aircraft was attacked by German fighters. It was claimed to have been shot down by Hauptman Herbert Huppertz in Fw 190A-6 of JG 2/III Stab. Crashed into the English Channel, just off of St. Catherine's Point, Isle of Wight, UK Dec 31, 1943. All crew was killed and the body of the co-pilot, 2nd Lt. James S. Dockendorf, was the only one recovered.
