Airspeed AS51 Horsa glider - USAAF markings painted over the original RAF ones. Rear fuselage has been removed with the quick release bolts in order that the cargo could be removed - possibly an anti tank gun or a Willy's Jeep.

Structural failure, port elevator tore loose from the horizontal stabilizer, pilot 2Lt A C Buckner and copilot 2Lt H R Croke Died non Battle (DNB) 12-Dec-44. 31 x passengers of the 17th airborne division also killed in crash.
