The aircraft “Dee Marie” was originally assigned to the 457th Bomb Group, and was transferred to the 381st on March 15, 1944. Jones inherited the plane from another pilot who had named it for his wife. Superstitious, Jones did not change the name. Jones recalled that "it was a really good flying plane, responsive to controls, stable-- a real pleasure to fly. I flew it on most of my missions, except when I was flying lead on missions where extra instrumentation was required." |
