My father, Paul Richard Shafer, was co-pilot of Angel Puss when she was shot down on Oct. 12, 1944. At the time, they had left Stoney Cross and were flying out of a renovated German fighter field near Cherbourg. They had just attacked a tank repair depot at La Bitche when an 88 came through the tail and exploded just above the plane. The explosion killed Srg. Moldanado instantly, the remaining members of the crew got out safely, only to be captured. My father and "Buzz" Sewell, the bombardier/nav bunked together in prison camp and were liberated by Patton's troops in 45.
