Formed on 1 September 1942 and equipped with Lockheed Ventura light bombers. Assigned to 2 Group of Bomber Command, the squadron undertook tactical Ramrod and Flying Circus operations to destroy and engage enemy fighters.



In June 1943, 2 Group was transferred to Fighter Command and became a part of the 2nd Tactical Air Force. The squadron was re-equipped with Mosquitos and undertook a range of tactical operations and precision low-level bombing attacks.



On 18 February 1944, the Squadron participated in the Amiens prison raid to free members of the French Resistance. In support of the Normandy invasion the squadron was employed to attack German transport and infrastructure, and on 14 July 1944, the Squadron attacked SS Batrracks at Bonneuil-Mantours in response to ill treatment of Allied prisoners.



464 Squadron was disbanded on 27 September 1945.
