Detailed History

Located 8 miles north of Okehampton, Devonshire, RAF Winkleigh was a fighter airfield for most of its wartime existence. It gained its US Station Number in October 1943 when a detachment of Spitfires from the US 12th Photographic Reconnaissance Squadron flew in to take part in exercises being carried out on the north coast of Devon to build up capabilities for the coming invasion of Europe.

That unit stayed until December 1943 but the USAAF retained an interest in Winkleigh through to late February 1945. The 74th Service Group handled US aircraft - mainly C-47s - in transit.
