Detailed History

The Manor at Hemingford Grey was the home of author, Lucy M Boston. The house is very old – built in the 1170s and modified by subsequent generations. Lucy bought the house in 1939 and during the war, she hosted recitals in the Music Room, playing records on a vast and impressive gramophone which still functions today. It is believed that the airmen came from RAF Wyton and possibly from RAF Alconbury as well.

Lucy Boston is famous for her series of children's books set in a fictional house 'Green Knowe', which resembles the Manor. Diana Boston, Lucy's daughter-in-law, currently gives tours of the house by prior arrangement. She says that it was an American serviceman who came to the music recitals, Jay (or 'J'?) Oldknow, who gave his name to the family featured in the series.
