Detailed History
This memorial records the last of sixty airmen of the Luftwaffe to die over Suffolk during the Second World War.
In the early hours of Sunday, March 4th 1945, a Junkers JU88 attacked Metfield Aerodrome, strafing it and killing Sgt. Voye of California. The JU88 then attempted to attack a B24 Liberator of the 1409th Air Bombardment Group. In turning to get beneath the Liberator, the Junkers was spotted and caught a wing-tip on the ground while in pursuit. The aircraft crashed at Grove Farm, Linstead Magna.
On March 8th 1945, the crew of the Junkers were buried in Linstead churchyard with full military honours; the Guard of Honour being provided by American Military Police. The airmen have since been re-interred in the German Military Cemetery at Cannock Chase
Two months later, on May 8th 1945, the war in Europe finished.
