Detailed History

The Sicily-Rome American Cemetery and Memorial is near the town of Nettuno in Italy. The site holds the remains of 7,861 fallen who died during the campaigns to liberate Sicily (Operation Husky: July-August 1943), Salerno (Operation Avalanche: September 1943) and the Anzio-Nettuno beachhead (Operation Shingle: January- May 1944). The names of another 3,095 missing servicemen are commemorated on the Wall of Missing inside the chapel. Art and architecture further honour the deceased and a museum outlines the critical military campaign in Sicily and Italy.

A temporary cemetery was established at Nettuno on 24 January 1944, two days after landing at Anzio during Operation Shingle. Following the War, the remains of servicemen resting in other temporary cemeteries in the region were reinterred at the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery by the American Graves Registration Service. The permanent cemetery was designed by Gugler, Kimball and Husted and landscaped by Ralph Griswold, the site was dedicated in 1956. Sicily-Rome American Cemetery is owned and maintained by the American Battle Monuments Commission.
