Editing by son, Duff Coleman. Some details of 1073rd QM Co provided me by Captain Edward Karvelot of the 1073rd QM Co.
1073rd was in training during a time the planners were preparing for the possibility of small airfields with very small QM contingents and Captain Karvelot said the eventual detachments of the 1073rd were larger than they had planned because of larger airfields and numbers of planes on each eventual 8th AF base. This meant that more than the normal number of QM'ers were promoted during training which resulted in Sgts shoveling coal. Howard Coleman was part of the "A" Detachment of the 1073rd and the "A" Detachment served with the 361st Fighter Group. He was in charge of solid fuel procurement, he shoveled coal, and he exited service as a T4.
