Haden T Brown

Military

Bombardier, Butler crew. Member of the Shultz crew. 381st BG, 533rd BS. Wounded on 5 November 1943 on Mission #42 to the railroad marshalling yards at Gelsenkirchen, Germany. The pilot, Lt Butler ordered Lt Brown to bail out. He removed his oxygen mask and went to the front escape hatch. He became anoxic, fell down and accidentally deployed his parachute. The chute was pulled through the open hatch and covered the ball turret. Lt Brown's leg was pulled out of the aircraft and he was trapped. He became unconscious for approximately 1 and a half to 2 hours. The aircraft landed with 4 members of the crew. The other 6 had bailed out.

The 533rd BS War Diary has the men who bailed out as landing near the airfield at West Malling at Kent then returning to duty. The 242nd Medical Detachment War Diary lists them as POW's.
