Neal Meyers was a waist gunner on a B-17, surviving 5 missions. He was awarded the Air Medal and Purple Heart on Nov 8, 1942 for downing a Focke-Wulf FW-190 aircraft, wounded on the same mission.

Neal had a cold and was grounded from flying (3 January 1943). His plane never returned; the downing of which was a dramatic story involving Arizona Harris, top gunner, blasting away as the plane sank into the English Channel. This story was made into a radio play. The loss of Neal's crew so unnerved him that he never flew again.
