SSgt. George Allen was killed in action on 1 August, 1943, during Operation Tidal Wave onboard the B-24D Liberator, Hell's Wench, 42-40994.

Dispatched to North Africa in 1943 with the 93rd Bomb Group to take part in Operation Tidal Wave. Part of the crew of the B-24D Liberator, Hell's Wench, 42-40994, on 1 August 1943. Upon reaching the target area the 93rd Bomb Group turned at the wrong point and headed for Bucharest, the pilot attempted to warn the mission commander and his element's lead pilot, Col. K.K. Compton. But, when they deliberately failed to respond or acknowledge the warnings, Addison Baker, Walter Stewart, Ramsey Potts and others, broke formation and led the remaining pilots of the 93rd's and 376th's Bomb Squadrons, who wanted to bomb their targets, back north toward Ploesti's refinery area.

On approach to the target, Hell's Wench, took two devastating direct hits by flak rounds, Col Baker jettisoned his bombs as both of his wings were hit, the aircraft began pouring out it's gasoline fuel, and quickly became engulfed in flames. Shortly, thereafter, Baker decided to pull up and give his men some slim chance to bail out and save themselves. But, their luck had run out. Hell's Wench, now a blowtorch of flames, stalled in the climb, rolled over, and crashed, killing the entire crew. 10 KIA. 1 Aug 43.
