He was attached to "Yardbird" for 2 operations (1 of which was aborted) and then early in Decemebr 1942 re was reassigned as the Ball Turret Gunner of B-17F 41-24585 "Wulfe Hund". Shot down 12 December 1942 in B-17 41-24585 'Wulfe Hund' while serving as Ball Turret Gunner. Prisoner of War (POW). He tried to evade capture but was captured on Christmas Day at the railroad station at Dijon, France.

Assigned as Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F 41-24602 "Yardbird" on a mission to bomb the U-Boat pens at St. Nazaire, France, but mechanical difficulties force the pilot to abort the mission.

SGT Dillard managed to evade capture for 13 days, but was finally apprehended by the Gestapo at the railroad station at Dijon, France.

Served as Ball Turret Gunner on B-17F 41-24585 "Wulfe Hund", 303BG/360BS on a mission to bomb the railroad marshalling yards at Rouen, France. The pilot crashlanded the battle damaged aircraft on a filed in France. SGT Dillard managed to evade capture for 13 days but was eventually captured as a Prisoner of War.
