Killed in Action (KIA)

Germany 26 July 1943 Interviewed after the war, the remaining crewmen told of the events of that day. After they bailed out and reached the ground, six of the eight crewmen were captured by the Germans and became P.O.W.’s. Two of the crew, George M. Guy and Robert G. Cadilek were shot by the Germans. The day after the crash, the remaining crewmen were shown the burned dog-tags of Oyler and Monahan, who died in the crash, and those of Lt. Guy and Cadilek. Through sign language the Germans told the crewmen that Lt. Guy and Lt. Cadilek had been shot trying to escape. One was shot in the chest and one in the lower abdomen. The Germans told the crew that these men were not seriously injured and would “both follow us to our camp within a few weeks”. Despite the assurances of the Luftwaffe, Lt. Cadilek died in a German hospital on August 4, 1944 and Lt. Guy died on August 12, 1943 from their injuries.
