George A. Klaar was born in Vermilion, Ohio in 1921. After graduating from Cleveland Heights High School in 1939 and attending Case School of Applied Science, George asserted his love of country and passion for aviation by enlisting in the US Army Air Corps Officer Training School. In 1944, as Second Lieutenant, he was deployed to Europe and served a full tour of duty as a B-17 Navigator with the 8th Air Force’s 351st Bombardment Group in Polebrook, England. For his service in WWII, he received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Bronze Stars. He remained on active duty with the USAF until 1955, maintaining reserve status with the rank of Major until 1965, when he retired from the military. He lived out his long and happy life as husband, father and grandfather in the San Francisco Bay Area, and passed away peacefully at the age of 94.

NARA files verified DFC and AM with three Oak Leaf Clusters for WWII. He earned two more OLCs to the AM in the Korean War. I believe the two bronze stars referenced in his biography were two bronze service stars on the EAME Campaign Medal as no Bronze Star Medal entries exist for George Klaar. He would further earn the NDSM, the Korean Service Medal and other awards for his continued service until his retirement in 1965.
