Served as Left Waist Gunner on B-17F 41-24585 "Wulfe Hund", 303BG/360BS on a mission to bomb the railroad marshalling yards at Rouen, France. The aircraft sustained battle damage and the pilot made a crashlanding on a field in France. TSGT Hartung managed to evade capture.

Returned to US 10 March 1943

Returned to the United States for Honorable Discharge. Location not in source data.
