The B-24 Aircraft Gunner SSgt. Fred Durand took part in Operation Tidal Wave, the bombing mission on Ploesti, August, 1943, flying in the B-24D Liberator, 41-24024. The aircraft was damaged by anti-aircraft fire over Ploesti and was limping home when caught and attacked by German fighters over the Ionian Sea. The plane was damaged and forced to ditch 127 km. North of Benghazi, Libya. Sgt. Durand was unable to escape his plane after it was ditched in the Mediterranean Sea, and was killed in Action (KIA). 1 Aug 1943.
