13 December 1942 while on temporary assignment to North Africa, on bombing run on port at Bizerte Roche moved in for an extra, more exact run on the target. 'Ambrose II' B-24D-10-CO 41-23909 suffered hit to gas line. Roche and the crew made a dead stick landing (previously thought impossible for a bomber). Stranded on the Algerian desert, the crew spent the night protecting the plane from natives. Anderson ended up in hospital and missed going back with his crew So he 'hitch-hiked back from Africa to Join Outfit in England!!
