Killed in Action (KIA) Shot down by fighters and crashed in B-17 42-97178 (Sweet Mama). The wreckage was found on the banks of the Isar River near Wolfratshausen, Bad-Tolz Wolfratshausen, Bavaria, Germany, about 15 miles southwest of Munich. The 384th BG was on a mission to bomb industrial targets in the Hollriegelskreuth area south of Munich. According to Sortie Report 5022, his plane had released its' bomb load and was exiting the target when Sweet Mama was attacked by enemy aircraft. The #1 engine caught fire and exploded in a puff of smoke, the plane fell out of formation and started gliding down slowly. One enemy plane was observed following the B-17 down and firing at it. Sweet Mama then exploded in mid-air. The enemy aircraft were believed to come from an airfield in Perchting.
