Francis Xavier Driscoll

Francis Driscoll had a twin brother, William, an elder brother Gerald, 2 younger brothers, Arthur and Edwin, and a sister Constance. Francis attended 4 years of Mechanic Arts High School in Boston, Massachusetts and later held a job as a motion picture projectionist in the local theater. He enlisted in the US Navy on 16 December 1941 (Service Number 6060644) and during a convoy in the North Sea on board USS “Decatur”, he had a serious accident on rough seas, falling down several metal steps. He was transferred for treatment to USS “Vulcan” on 17 March 1942. His disfigured nose was operated on many times until he was discharged from naval service. Francis then enlisted in the Air Corps in August 1942 and trained as a Radio Operator. He joined the William Quaintance crew at Geiger Field before they were sent overseas to England in October 1943. Assigned to the 306th Bomb Group / 369th Bomb Squadron as a Radio Operator/Gunner, Francis was Killed In Action in the loss of B-17# 42-31695 on 22 February 1944.
