He worked for Lockheed building aircraft and could have claimed deferment but elected to enlist in January 1944. He sailed for England in January 1945 after training as an air gunner and was to fly on 16 combat missions. On the final one, crippled by flak, they were able to reach Malmo where they were interned. ( INT had mechanical failure and landed in Sweden on 3/12/45 in B-17 44-8577). Released May 28 1945 He returned to the USA in June aboard the 'Queen Mary'. He was afterwards a mechanical engineer with Rockwell-Collins in Cedar Rapids.
