Lt. Estelle Q. martin was a B-24 bombardier in the 8th Air Force detached (TDY) to North Africa and the 9th Air Force. He was killed in Action (KIA) 13 December 1942. While on temporary assignment to North Africa, on bombing run on port at Bizerte, when his pilot, Lt. John Roche, moved in for an extra, more exact run on his target flying, Ambrose II, the B-24D-10-CO, 41-23909, and suffered a hit to one of his gas lines. Roche and the crew made a dead stick landing (previously thought impossible for a bomber). Stranded on the Algerian desert, the crew spent the night protecting the plane from natives.
