Shot down 8 April 1944 in B-24 #4252596 'Mammy Yokum. ' Prisoner of War (POW).
Heroically saved a fellow crewmate Philip Carroll. After Carroll was injured and unconscious due to a loss of blood, Whaley clipped Carroll's parachute on him, grabbed the d-ring and threw Carroll out of the waist window, pulling the d-ring to make sure Carroll's parachute opened. Carroll survived and was made POW. Whaley was the last man out of the doomed B-24
