He was drafted into the Army in March 1943, serving first in an anti-aircraft unit before being transferred to the Air Corps. After training Earl and his crew picked up a B-17 in Nebraska and flew to the 398thBG at Nuthampstead in England. He flew on 26 combat missions, including two to pick up POWs from Barth camp in Germany. His crew then flew a 'battle-weary' B-17 back to the USA. After discharge in September 1945 he spent nine years in the Iowa National Guard and for 38 years operated an auto- body business.
