Alexander Markowski enlisted in the Air Corps in April 1942 and followed training in aerial gunnery and engineering. He graduated as a Sgt from the Wendover Aerial Gunnery and Fire Control School in 1943. He met fellow engineer Sgt Joseph Strukel at Moses Lake, Washington and both were later members of the William Quaintance crew in the 306th Bomb Group / 369th Bomb Squadron which was sent overseas and arrived in England in October 1943. Alexander was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in action on 5 January 1944 and was promoted to Technical Sergeant on 15 February 1944. He was the sole survivor from the loss of B-17# 42-31695 on 22 February 1944. Made a Prisoner of War (POW) he was detained for 15 months and returned to the US. He started a machine repair business in Utica, NY which he managed with his wife Marietta. Alexander Markowski died at an early age in 1970.
