Shot down 9 October 1943 in B-17 #42-37718, Sgt Doug Farris was killed in Action (KIA) during a bombing run on Gdyna, Poland. The damaged aircraft was strafed by German fighters over Denmark on it's flight back to Thurleigh, England. It crashed on Samso Island, Denmark.

Alstrup, Samso Island, Denmark

9 October 1943 After the pilot left the formation in the damaged B-17, another squadron of German fighters attacked. The unit was commanded by Major Rolf Jung. The landing gear of the B-17 was lowered by Lt. Miles McCormick to indicate they could no longer fight. Jung is reported to have broken off the attack. The crew parachuted to safety but eventual capture around the village of Alstrup on Samso Island, Denmark.
