Dominic G Leogrande

Leogrande was shot down on 29 April 1944 in B-17 #42-102520. He died as a result of a flak burst, which exploded between him and the other waist gunner. Both bled to death and went down with the aircraft, which crashed 5km from Texel Island
Leogrande's pilot: Joseph McClurkin, reportedly kept the plane steady while the remaining crew bailed out, but upon ditching in the sea, the were dragged down by their chutes and drowned. Their remains were recovered and buried in a civilian cemetery Den Helder, Holland and repatriated to the US in 1948.
The co-pilot was rescued while unconscious by a Luftwaffe seaplane, and woke up in a German Army hospital in Amsterdam.
