Avord, France | 28 April 1944 | 42-38061 with the Henslin Crew aboard was hit by flak over the target, the airfield at St. Avord, France. The flak tore off the #2 engine, the impact of which threw SSGT Bill Blackmon against the other waist gunner, SSGT Clarence Williams, crushing Williams against the tail wheel door. Blackmon reckoned that Williams was rendered helpless with the pain. The aircraft initiall held together, but was observed to quickly break into 5 or 6 pieces. Only 3 crew survived. |
