While serving as Radio Operator on the B-24D, 41-23745, Katy Bug, 18 Nov 1942, Clarence Witmer's airplane suffered the failure of two engines and attempted an emergency landing at Little Stukeley, but the aircraft struck a tree and crashed. 4 crew members were killed. 4 KIA. TSgt Witmer was not injured. RTD. The aircraft was salvaged on 27 Nov 42.
