Object Number - UPL 15366 - Chester Slomczenski

I got to know my Uncle Chet through the many letters he wrote home whenever time allowed. April 11, 1945 his younger brother Frankie arrived home from school to find their mother crying while tending to dinner preparation. When asked, she pointed to a telegram on the table which Frankie read to learn Chet had gone missing in action. Chet's true fate went unknown for months and it was years before his death was made official. He was a young man with a wise, old soul, proud to be of service to his country and his family. Killed in Action (KIA) 30 March 1945 in AC #42102590 B-17 'In Like Errol'

Technical Sergeant Chester M. Slomczenski was born October 28, 1924. His next of kin were his parents, Michael and Lottie Slomczenski. His hometown was Detroit, Michigan.

On March 30, 1945, he was the Flight Engineer aboard “In Like Errol,” B-17 tail #42-102590, of the 381th Bomb Group, 535th Bomb Squadron, when it went down over Gross Haesuslingen, Germany.

He is buried at Ardennes US Military Cemetery in Belgium.

Chester was my father's brother. My father kept as much of Chester's things as he could and I now have what was left. Through these things, especially Chet's letters, I'm compelled to keep his memory alive.
