SSgt. Charles Ursel Simmons was assigned to the 564th Bomb Squadron, the 389th Bomb Group, and the 8th Air Force. He and the entire 8th Air Force were deployed (TDY) to the 9th Air Force in North Africa for Operation Tidal Wave, the mission to destroy the oil refineries at Ploesti, Romania. Sgt. Simmons flew aboard the B-24D Liberator, #42-40746, Old Irish : 25 combat missions, 17 as Ball Turret Gunner, and 8 as Waist Gunner). ETD



Awards: DFC (OLC), AM (3 OLC), WWII Victory, EAME (2 x battle stars).
