Initially served with B Company, 21st AIB, of the American 11th Armored Division during the battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in December 1944, and ultimately wound up in the 94th General Hospital at Torte Worth Court. After he recovered from his wounds, he was transferred to the 8th AF and subsequently to the 493rd BG at Debach on limited assignment in May 1945.

Following assessment he was re-classified from Rifleman to Duty Airman and assigned to the 846th Air Service Group where he was involved in assisting the packing and crating of spare parts and materials prior to the Groups re-deployment to the United States.
