Object Number - UPL 34545 - 2nd Lt Albert A Cowie 368FS, 359FG, 8AF.

Assigned to 368FS, 359FG, 8AF USAAF. Failed to Return (FTR) escort Hannover in P-51D 44-11696 A/C seen to be losing fuel throughout the mission crashed near Halberstadt Prisoner of War (POW) 3-Mar-45 MACR 13406

Lt. Albert A. Cowie, of Glendale, CA, flew with the 368th Fighter Squadron, 359th Fighter Group, from 23 January 1945 through 3 March 1945, when he had to bail out after strafing ground targets and taken prisoner.

3 March 1945: Lt. John F. Collins led the group and our squadron on March 3rd after Colonel Randolph returned early. We furnished support to the 4th Force, 1st Air Division. The target was Hanover. After breaking escort many ground targets were attacked and strafed resulting in the destruction of numerous railroad installations. It was while making a pass on one of these ground targets that we lost 2nd Lt. Albert A. Cowie.  Lt. Cowie was last seen about 1110 in the vicinity of Gandersheim.  Lt. Kreuzman reported that he heard over the R/T an unidentified pilot say he was having to bail out about 1115. It is presumed that this was Lt. Cowie.

Awards: POW, WWII Victory, EAME.
