Phillip Francis Uhlenbrock
Military437th TCG Association 1982 Reunion book photo
He registered for the WW II draft on 15 February 1942, and he was listed as employed by Western Electric Co. in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 6' 1" tall; weighed 195 pounds; had black hair, brown eyes and a 'light’ complexion. He entered the service (#17 061 428) on 03 March 1942 from St. Louis, Missouri. He enlisted in the Air Corps as a Private; he had four years of high school education, was single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Electricians".
First Lieutenant Uhlenbrock is listed on the 437th TCG Special Orders #195, dated 27 December 1943; these were the orders generated at Pope Field (Fort Bragg, NC) for the first phase of movement by air and by rail of the 437th personnel to their eventual overseas deployment.
We also have him listed as Captain Uhlenbrock, participating as a C-47 Pilot or Co-Pilot on three 437th flights: Mission Detroit on 06 June 1944; Mission Galveston on 07 June 1944; and the re-supply and air evacuation Mission #49 in August of 1944.
We do not have a copy of the orders, but Captain Uhlenbrock also flew as Co-Pilot on their first Operation Market-Garden mission (the Bridge Too Far) on 17 September 1944. He and three others of the crew were killed in the crash of their aircraft after being hit by flak. The Crew Chief was the only survivor; details are provided in Missing Air Crew Report (MACR) #10251. The 'Find a grave' Memorial for Captain Uhlenbrock has a brief description of the incident.
