George LeRoy Carroll

Military

T/Sgt George LeRoy Carroll was born on 26 October 1923 in San Francisco, California, and grew up in Los Gatos, California. After graduating from Los Gatos High School in 1942, Carroll joined the Army Air Corps and from August 1944 was posted to the 554th Bombardment Squadron, 386th Bombardment Group, then part of the 9th Air Force, USAAF. As a B-26 Marauder air mechanic and tail gunner, Carroll completed at least 45 missions over France and Germany, and after the war had a long career in the commercial airline industry.



Carroll's A-2 Flying Jacket is held in IWM's collection. It was painted in St Trond, Belgium by an artist named Hugo, with design input from Carroll.
