Object Number - UPL 36829 - Herbert W. Andrews (front, far left) with B-24 crew.

Herbert W. Andrews, of Mt. Olive, NC, arrived in Eye, England on June 5, 1944, and served as a radar operator in a B-17G of the 848th BS in the 490th BG. He received the Air Medal while taking part in the last 8th Air Force attacks on Nazi airfields and railroad marshalling yards in the heart of the Third Reich. He returned home to his wife, Ethel Andrews, and together they raised five children- the youngest being my father, Pat Andrews, Sr. Herbert W. Andrews loved to travel and take pictures, sing in quartets, leather working, talking on his ham radio and spending time with his family. My best childhood memories are playing in his garden, waking up to Christmas Morning at his home in Goldsboro, NC, and riding with him to the railroad yard to see the trains.

I am proud to have an American Hero for a grandfather, who served and risked everything for our freedom. I will endeavor to insure that his heroism and sacrifice is remembered by my son and nephew and their future children.
