He entered the service as a private in the Air Corps on 21 August 1942 from Erie, Pennsylvania. He had four years of high school education, was single, without dependents and his civilian occupation was listed as: "Semiskilled welders and flame cutters".

James was a member of the 437th Troop Carrier Group Association, and he appeared on their membership rolls from 1984 until 1998.
