After training as a gunner he was deployed overseas to the Group at Bury St. Edmunds where he took part in 25 combat missions, his most memorable that of 11th January 1944 when - on a mission to hit the Messerschmitt factory at Brunswick - the mission was cancelled just as they began the bomb run. 20 aircraft failed to receive the order and went on the attack; 10 of them were shot down. He was discharged in September 1945 and went back to factory work in Cedar Rapids.
