Atlee Gulley served as a pilot with the 352nd Bomb Squadron of the 301st Bomb Group, flying missions out of Lucera, Italy. On 12 March 1945, his aircraft B-17 #4297918 suffered a mechanical failure and crashed at Kezethely, Hungary. The whole crew survived and Gulley was taken as a Prisoner of War (POW).
