Roy was sent to No5BFTS to train as a bomber pilot. He started his tour flying Lancasters at 619 Squadron and finished his tour with 227 Squadron. He then flew Hurricanes for 1690 Bomber Defence Training Flight. After the war he flew Halifaxes towing gilders and dropping paratroops for Heavy Transport Support before flying Avro Yorks during the Berlin Blockade in which he flew a record 404 missions. Returning to Bomber command he flew B-29 Superfortress as B1 Washingtons before Jet training on Meteors and joining XV squadron on Canberras. He was then one of the first pilots converted for Vickers Valiants for 138 Squadron, BCDU and 207 Squadron Flight Simulator before retiring from the RAF in 1964 to resume his pre war career as a welder in the Derbyshire coal fields.
