Born

Carter County, KY, USA 3 September 1908 Hignite was born on a farm in Carter County, Kentucky, where he grew up with six brothers and three sisters. His family did not own the land, but had to grow whatever the man they rented from wanted, including corn and tobacco. Hignite was married to a woman named Dorothy in 1941, and moved to Portsmouth, where he worked in a brickyard. During World War II, he and five of his brothers entered into the Army Air Force. He served part of his time during the war as a cook, and spent a considerable amount of time in Germany, which he liked. After the war, Hignite worked for the state’s road construction department for several years; three of those years were spent helping to build the road to Carter Caves, for which he was paid one dollar an hour. Eventually, he worked at AK Steel, retiring when he was sixty-five. Hignite had two daughters, Ava Miller and Ruth Phelps, and a son, Gretchel Hignite; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. He was a member of Westwood Church of God.
