Clyde J Steele
MilitaryClyde Steele served with the 52nd Fighter Control Squadron at Saffron Walden. He would guide fighter pilots in difficulties to somewhere they could land safely.
In a recent interview with the Battle Creek Enquirer he remembered "Some of those guys were so shot up, some of them were calling in, his left arm was shot up, he's flying one-handed, trying to keep the thing level, another guy says well I've the lost the tip of my one wing...we heard everything," Steele remembered. "I heard some of them just cry like the devil, scared, and some of them, actually it was on their first mission. Lo and behold, they're the ones getting blown out of the air. But others are very quiet, very calm."
