John D Langston
MilitaryJack grew up in San Luis Obispo County, California, where he attended school, including Atascadero High School and San Luis Obispo Junior College. He was a talented musician, a saxophonist. When America entered the war, he was working as a railroad brakeman in Kern County, California. Jack, a member of the 394th Fighter Squadron, was killed 22 June, 1944, in one of four P-38s lost to the 367th Fighter Group, during a low-level strafing attack on the German defenses at Cherbourg. A flak hit set his fighter on fire; witnesses saw the pilot bail out, but Langston's body was never found. He is memorialized at the American Cemetery in Normandy, Colleville-sur-Mer.
