Gilberto Guerra Gonzalez

Military

My father, Gilberto G. Gonzalez from Rio Grande City, Texas, took part in World War II in Europe and participated in some of its most important battles. He enlisted on October 1, 1942. He was assigned to the 9th AAF and on October 7, 1943 was sent to the EAME where he was assigned to the 2087th QM Truck Co., 1520 QM Battalion. He was trained as a Truck Driver Light (345) and traveled all over England. Somehow, which we don't know because he passed away, was part of the Normandy Invasion on D Day. He told us he arrived in the second wave. Which beach not certain. We thought it was Utah Beach, but when he described the sea of bodies, that sounded more like Omaha Beach. We're looking for any information that could help us. He was part of the Liberation of Paris, as he remembered sleeping under the Eiffel Tower. Later, he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and liberation of towns from German control. The 1520 Bn. was dismantled and his unit was attached to the 7th Armored Division, 23rd Armored Infantry Battalion, Co. A. They crossed the Rhine River and on to Germany. He took part in the raiding of German towns, prisoner of war enclosures and civil control even after the end of the war on May, 8 1945. He was honorable discharged on 4th of December, 1945. He lived a wonderful life, full of adventure, hardship, and success.
